Grand Rapids, MN – From a field of 23 applicants, John Dahmen of Aurora, was awarded Lake Country Power’s $1,500 Les Beach Memorial scholarship. The funds will be used toward his higher education pursuits this fall at the University of Minnesota, Duluth for finance/accounting.

“John has been a positive role model for the students of Mesabi East High School and other students in Northern St. Louis County,” said Christopher Ismil, director of Iron Range Youth in Action of St. Louis County. “Academically, John is an excellent student. With respect to John’s involvement in his community and school, I am proud. Sometimes peer pressure and social norms make it hard for young students to step up and lead. He is filled with honesty, integrity and the pride of knowing he will stand up for what is right in the face of ridicule and self interest.” 

As a membership benefit, the Les Beach Memorial scholarship is available for seniors whose parents/guardians receive their electricity from Lake Country Power, a member-owned cooperative serving rural northern Minnesota. The scholarship is awarded to one high school senior each spring, following review by an independent search committee.

Lake Country Power provides $25,500 in scholarships to students each year through the cooperative’s Operation Round Up® program.
